The image above is a view of the North facing front wall of "Garage Mahal" taken from an elevated platform set
up in Lois Lane. 180 degree views of the valley and the coast can be seen from the kitchen and verandah and the 12.5meter walkway (at upper floor level) which runs along the inside of the top of the Vertical Greenwall.
This image has been digitally enhanced to show the projected growth of the Virginia Creeper (parthenocissus quinquefolia) Vertical Greenwall by late 2009.
Andrew Hayim De Vries is a well known West Australian artist and designer based in Fremantle, W.A. His previous residence and studio, 100 Hubble Street in East
Fremantle was an eclectic example of art, architecture and urban recycling that
received widespread acclaim and media coverage.
"Garage Mahal," located in Lois Lane, White Gum Valley, Fremantle, Western Australia
is Andrew HDV's latest "House Where" project. The house is designed and constructed
using immensely strong, simple and cost effective industrial components and practises.
Through every aspect of the design and construction of "Garage Mahal" great care was
taken to address the key areas of environmental sustainability to minimise the use of
power and water and the necessity for maintenance of the property.
The Vertical Greenwalls, vegetable and all other gardens on the property are watered
by an integrated greywater recycling and rainwater catchment and subterranean drainage system that has fueled their fantastic growth to this point.
The Virginia Creeper (parthenocissus quinquefolia) selected for the Vertical Greenwalls in this project is a hardy deciduous climber which has a brilliant red autumn toning
(it also produces black berries in autumn), and was considered ideal for an exposed
steel mesh wall.
Through the combined use of excellent natural ventilation, internal insulation, the
Vertical Greenwalls and passive solar design throughout the property, "Garage Mahal"
offers a wonderful cool sanctuary in the often harsh summer of Western Australia
and an equally inviting environment through Western Australia's winter.
